I've been training in martial arts since I was four years old. My teacher, Kent Bergstrom, passed away in 2022, leaving YamaMizu Ryu - his life's work - to me. I have spent the past year modernizing how our arts are taught: softening our tai chi instruction to be based in enjoyment, adapting our karate to be applicable to real world self protection, letting go of titles and formalities in many areas, and recognizing the needs of my students. I teach predominantly under served LGBTQIA+ youth and young adults. Our school has long been predominantly women, non-binary and gender-fluid folks. I am hoping to find a wider community, as it is easy to feel isolated in small-town wisconsin.
