Key Principles of Aikido – An Experiential Exploration

July 25 @ 8:30 AM - 9:30 AM CDT

Aikido is a martial art of blending, of joining with another’s energy. Someone initiates an attack and rather than hard block and answer, the aikido practitioner reaches out, engages with the timing and direction (the energy of the partner/attacker) and leads that effort into a defense.

It’s beautiful and hard to do. Techniques can be learned step by step – and we allow the technique to do the work.

In this class we’ll be exploring a circular movement called a pivot or kaiten (turning). We change direction by circling the back foot, allowing us to stay forward engaging an incoming attack (for example a punch or grab) and then continue to neutralize the attack and lead the partner to the ground. As part of our exploration, we’ll also learn about leading and timing – again allowing the energy to come to us.

It’s best if the students already know how to do a basic back fall – but all skill levels are welcome.
